Hello, my name is Serena and I am one of the Mentors with the ReMend Mentoring Program for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients in the San Diego County area.
KIDNEY PATIENT EXPERIENCE
I was about to turn 19 when I was diagnosed with kidney failure. I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease called P-ANCA vasculitis, which attacked my kidneys and lungs. The following year, my father donated his kidney to me. Unfortunately it never worked, and eventually clotted a couple weeks after transplant surgery. After that ordeal, it became clear that my auto-immune disease was actually lupus. I’ve been on dialysis for 8 ½ years now, and am on the kidney transplant list.
There have been a lot of bumps along the way that have temporarily taken me off the list, which is the main reason why I’ve been waiting so long for a kidney. I’ve gone through a lot of issues that have required me to be on special diets, in addition to the renal diet. My experiences have inspired me to pursue a career in nutrition. I’m currently going to school full time at San Diego State University, and expect to graduate next spring.
You were given this life because you’re strong enough to live it.
I live in North County in Vista and am willing to travel throughout the county to provide mentoring
support for those that want/need a mentor.
Language spoken is English.
