Hello, my name is Ruben Arevalo and I am 58 years old. I am one of the mentors at ReMend Mentoring Program for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients in San Diego County area.
KIDNEY PATIENT EXPERIENCE
My doctor diagnosed me with the kidney disease on November 2010, I was 52 years old. At first, I couldn’t accept the fact that I was now going to depend on a machine. So I pretended that I was fine and ignored the doctors, believing that I would get better. Truth is: I got worse. My legs looked like balloons and I felt like I was drowning each time I laid down.
On February 25, 2011 I went to the hospital because I didn’t recognize any of my family members. I was unconscious. When I arrived to the ER they sent me right away to surgery for the axis. When I woke up that night I saw a tube on the right side of my chest.
Dialysis had changed my life because now I can breathe normally and I have lost all the extra liquid I had before. I now live a healthier life still. My nutritionist has taught me how to eat healthier!
Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact.
