Hello, my name is Ralph (Rafael) and I am one of the Mentors with ReMend Mentoring Program for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients in San Diego County area.
KIDNEY PATIENT EXPERIENCE
With a long history of Diabetes and Hypertension in July 2000 a chronic case of Renal Insufficiency was detected by my physician and Nephrologist. In February 2002 my kidneys failed and I officially had ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease) and required dialysis to continue living. I started hemodialysis through a catheter shortly after and in late March 2002 an insertion of a peritoneal catheter was preformed and I began peritoneal dialysis. The flexibility of being able to dialyze in the comfort of my home permitted me to continue to work. My job required me to travel and with precautions I was able to dialyze as well perform my duties with no issues. I retired from my job in August 2007 and continued peritoneal dialysis and later hemodialysis through a catheter until I received my gift of life a kidney transplant in April 2010 at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Following my medical teams instructions and with medication adherence, I now have a second chance at life without dialysis.
“The support from family, friends, medical professionals, and my faith is what helped me through the voyage with ESRD.”
I live in South San Diego, CA and more than willing to travel anywhere in San Diego County to provide mentoring support for those want/need a mentor.
