Hello, my name is Julia Ortega and I am one of the Mentors with the ReMend Mentoring Program for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients in the San Diego County area.
KIDNEY PATIENT EXPERIENCE
At the age of 35 I was misdiagnosed with Lupus in Mexico, however I decided to seek a second opinion with a specialist. He requested a kidney biopsy which showed kidney failure do to inflammation. At that moment I decided to be treated in San Diego and was diagnosed with kidney failure secondary to Wegeners Granulomatosis. I was put on high dosages of prednisone and on chemotherapy for nine months which reversed the damaged on my kidneys. In 2013 I had a flare up of Wegeners which damaged my kidneys again and this time around the chemotherapy, prednisone and plasmapherisis treatments weren’t able to reverse the damage.
I had to start dialysis immediately, I choose to do Peritoneal since I have a 12 yr old boy that is very involved in sports and I wanted to have the liberty of being able to continue with the closest thing to my normal life. I am so happy to say that even though I have ESRD I can still live a normal life, this has not changed my way of thinking nor the way I see life as a blessing.
Live life to the fullest, enjoy every moment of it as ESRD should not be an impediment.
I live in Calexico, Ca, I am willing to travel in the Imperial Valley and San Diego area to provide mentoring support to anyone in need of a mentor.
