Hello, my name is Ivan Sablan and I am one of the Mentors with the ReMend Mentoring Program for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients in the San Diego County area.
KIDNEY DONOR EXPERIENCE
As a 30 year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, and prior to that six years in the Marine Corps, I have lived my entire adult life serving others and making sacrifices. Along those lines of serving others and preserving lives, I have been a blood donor for the same amount of years. When I heard of the need of another employee on the police department who had kidney failure, although I didn’t know the person, I did not hesitate to see what I could do to help. I knew nothing of renal failure, dialysis, or organ donations. All that mattered to me was that a fellow human being, along with his family, were in need.
I donated my kidney on June 18, 2014. My health and lifestyle hasn’t changed since the surgery. I don’t feel any different. I continue to workout and run without any difficulty. I continue to participate in obstacle/mud runs. I also ran a 185 mile relay race from Huntington Beach to Mission Bay with 11 other kidney donors in April of 2015. Life with one kidney hasn’t slowed me down one bit.
“Throughout my life God has been gracious to me and has given me good health. As an act of gratitude and praise to Him, I have used this opportunity as a living kidney donor to be the means for another human being to live a more healthy and productive life.”
I live in Escondido and I am willing to travel anywhere in San Diego County to provide mentoring support for those that want/need a mentor.
I speak English.
