Dennis Bourque

Hello, my name is Dennis and I am one of the Mentors with the ReMend Mentoring Program for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients in the San Diego County area.

I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at an early age and have managed to learn to live with its long term effects including chronic kidney stones for the past 30 years. By 2001 my kidney disease progressed to kidney failure and my nephrologist told me to prepare for dialysis or a transplant or possibly both.

“It was during this that I realized how much support I would need from my family, friends and my medical team. I knew that I would need to make a lifelong commitment to take charge of my health and learn as much as I could about finding a suitable donor and living with the lifelong effects of transplantation. I believe that my positive attitude and approach to life along with support from others would get me through this difficult phase of my life.”

I was fortunate enough to prolong my health until my kidney function reached stage 5 in 2009. Because of the long term effects of dealing with the chronic kidney stones I needed to have both native kidneys removed. In July of 2009 I had my left kidney removed and in March of 2010 my right kidney was removed and I received my transplant. I was blessed to have my brother give me the  ultimate gift of life with his donated kidney.

I live in Scripps Ranch and I am more than willing to travel anywhere in San Diego County to provide mentoring support for those that want/need a mentor.
