Hi, my name is Daniel Tapia and I’m here as part of this great mentor program for people that live with ESRD and are contemplating kidney transplant and beyond.
KIDNEY PATIENT EXPERIENCE
I knew something wasn’t right since a physical I took in 1998, too much protein in the urine… like a good Mexican I ignored it because you know that’s what we do. Is better to ignore it than to face it head on.
In 2003 I had a biopsy done and it turned out to be Focal Segmental Glomeruli Sclerosis. The Doctor told me: it’s too late for treatment now we just have to wait for your kidneys to totally fail to put you on dialysis… fast-forward 8 years and my creatinine was at 14.20 and my kidney’s were function at less than 2%. I spent 3 months on hemodialysis, I didn’t like that at all, and I spent 2 and a half years on P.D. I was placed on the transplant list and luckily I had family members willing to donate. My brother was almost a perfect match with allowed me to go through the transplant process and here I am!
“Life is a gift, that’s why today is a “present” – (Everything is better with laughter).”
I live in Chula vista but I can travel anywhere in SD county.
